Self drive to the Serengeti
Question
My daughter and I will be spending time in Tanzania next June and would love to spend a couple of days in the Serengeti before flying home from Mwanza. Is it possible to hire a car and drive ourselves in the Serengeti for a couple of days and stay somewhere budget in the park for the night. All I see are expensive safari tours advertised. Any advice appreciated.

Having been to the Serengeti (as well as other areas) in our recent (fall) safari, there’s no way on earth I’d ever attempt to drive it myself. The roads (if you can call many of them that) are not often marked, are some of the worst surfaces we’ve ever been on (from big ruts to outright water filled ditches that nothing short of a Land Cruiser is going to get through) and often criss-cross in a gazillion different directions.
I believe “Serengeti” means “endless plains” in Swahili. It’s not somewhere you want to get lost, even if could somehow manage to drive those very rough roads.
Do yourself a big favor and go with a guide..the guide is also going to be the person who finds animals for you, tells you their habits and characteristics and all around educates you about what you’re seeing. A self-drive totally omits that, and all you’d be doing is driving around hoping you get lucky and see something..
