There are about 3 Campsites in Arusha National Park. They are comfortable and well arranged to cover main parts of Arusha National Park. National Park camp sites located in Arusha National Park: 3 at the foot of Tulisia Hill, 2 km from Momella Gate, and 1 near Ngurdoto Gate. They have drop toilets. Momella Gate is where you access Mount Meru, which is located inside Arusha NP.

Below are details of Main Campsite in Arusha National Park:

Public Campsite  #1:

Altitude:1650 m.a.m.s.l.

One of three campsites inside Arusha national park that are accessible to the public – even those not climbing mount Meru. It is located on the slopes of mount Meru and is given the name public due because it can be shared if there is more than one camper using it on the same day, whereas private campsites are exclusive for as long as the inhabitant is using it.

Despite being in the wild, it has running cold water available, along with several modern facilities such as flushing toilets, a shower (cold water) and modern wash basins – all housed inside a small brick building. There also is another separate building that serves as the kitchen, although only equipped with sinks and counters.

Location of Public Campsite Number 1 (Arusha)The public campsite number one of Arusha national park is located on the eastern slopes of mount Meru and just a few kilometres north of the city of Arusha – Tanzania. There are two more campsites nearby, one less than 500 metres away – the number two public campsite and another – the number three public campsite a ten minutes drive south of it.

The whole campsite is situated next to a hill and deep within the rain forest region of the mountain. In fact the whole campsite is a clearing amongst tall trees and thick undergrowth with much of the camp being covered in a natural evergreen lawn.

Public Campsite  #2:

Altitude:1650 m.a.m.s.l.

One of three campsites inside Arusha national park that are accessible to the public – even those not climbing the mountain. It is termed ‘public’ because it can be shared if there is more than one visitor using it on the same day, contrary to private campsites in the park which are used exclusively for as long as the visitor or group of visitors is using it.

It has no built accommodation, meaning all its inhabitants need to bring their own tents; However, there is running cold water available, along with several modern facilities such as flushing toilets, a shower (cold water) and modern wash basins – all housed inside a small brick building.

Location of Public Campsite Number 2 (arusha)The campsite is located on the eastern slopes of mount Meru and just a few kilometres north of the city of Arusha, and well inside Arusha national park. About two hundred metres away is the campsite number one (also public) with about the same facilities as this one but slightly larger, and another – the public campsite number three about a kilometre south of it.

Its location also puts it in the rainforest zone of the mountain, with the whole campsite being a small clearing with tall trees and thick undergrowth all around it. There is a hill south of it that although fully covered in greenery, turns gold at dawn.

Public Campsite # 3 (arusha):

Altitude:1675 m.a.m.s.l.

One of the public campsites that are located inside the Arusha national park that is open to all – even those not climbing the mountain. It is a tents only campsite, meaning everyone intending to use it must have their own tents, but there are facilities provided in the form of modern toilets, a kitchen and two concrete dining benches.

The toilets are housed inside a separate brick building, with separate sides for men and women – each with modern W.C’s, a cold water shower, modern wash basins and a good supply of cold water from higher up the mountain. The kitchen is also housed in a separate brick building, with limited facilities in the form of two kitchen sinks and a concrete counter.

Location of Public Campsite Number 3 (arusha)The campsite is located deep within the montane forest of Arusha national park and on the slopes of mount Meru – Tanzania. It is a bit further into the forest when compared to the first and second public campsites, normally passing them on the way there.

There is a river valley passing just south of the campsite, with the sound of its gushing water being audible at all times from the camp’s kitchen or benches – loud enough to drown most animal sounds. This is the same river that passes near the Momela gate (west of it). For more information on its location, please see the map below (click to start)
